All of the 3rd graders in SPARK (a program for gifted students in our school district) went to the Binghamton Zoo on last Thursday for a 3-part program of up close animal contact. It was really interesting and Potter and I agreed that we both learned a lot about animals we love. The first part our group attended was learning about a Bard Owl and another bird (pictured) which we were not able to remember the species of. Duh, I should have paid closer attention. In any event, Potter's SPARK class at his school had studied owl pellets and dissected them, so they knew a lot about this owl and how he hunts, sleeps, eats, etc..... All of the birds that are at zoos are apparently either on loan or have come to the zoo injured from the wild or an animal preserve. We were also right next to the Bald Eagle enclosure and the docent talked to the children a bit about the bald eagles, how they got their name (since they don't look bald, balde was a foreign name for white), and how they can see fish from very high up in the sky and swoop down quickly.
